Background
12. Background: The Rani (then known as Ushas) attended the Academy at the same time as the Master and the Doctor (as well as some other less well known Time Lords). She was one of only a small number of Time Ladies that was granted admission thanks to her superior intellect. She became friends with the two of them (canon suggests she and the Doctor had a relationship during this time) and more than likely helped them with their homework since she has always been the most academically driven. Canon has said the Doctor failed a number of his tests, so it makes sense the Rani helped him out a little, also it’s likely the Master was more interested in causing trouble than doing work. It’s my belief they originally allowed her to hang around with them because she was so clever, while she hung around with them because they were popular. Her main interest has always been in biochemistry and she was exiled from the planet after one her experiments went a little out of control and the lab mice she was working with grew so large one of them ate the president’s cat.

In canon she was in her second body, little is known about her first, presuambly she went around experimenting on the poor creatures whose planet she landed on. (more to come on this incarnation soon)

She regenerated a second time when she under estimated the inhabitants of a planet she had taken over and they decided rather than letting her use all of it's resources and people for experimentation that it would better to just blow up the place rather than let her win. She almost managed to get away but the shockwaves of the explosion badly damaged the TARDIS with the Rani inside and she had to regenerate.

Personality : The Rani is generally speaking considered to be evil, though she isn’t evil so much as just incredibly focused on her science/experiments to the detriment of everything else. She sees everything in terms of what she can get out of it, how she can use it to further her knowledge of science. She will happily enslave entire species so that she has a ready supply of subjects to experiment on. However while this may sound really bad, in the episode ‘Mark of The Rani’ during one of her experiments into the effects on removing sleep from one species when the species in question begins to destroy itself as an after effect of sleep deprivation she travels to Earth (a planet she is not fond of) to take the chemicals needed for sleep from humans to give to her original subjects in order to sort out the chaos she has caused. She often considered cold, since she has travelled alone for so long she tends to say what she thinks, and in her previous (canon) regeneration she was very unfeeling, caring only for science and research and nothing else. Her new regeneration however is a little different, while she is still mostly focused on her experiments she is more emotional, something she is not exactly happy about. After so long not caring about anything, nor feeling emotion the fact she is suddenly forced to deal with them bothers her greatly, making her feel weak and making it more difficult to focus.
